1991-1999 | Origins and first international steps
Vircell was founded in Granada in 1991 as a biotechnology company specialized in the diagnosis of human infectious diseases.
From the beginning, the company combined in-house development, internal manufacturing and an international outlook, with its first products focused on cell culture and immunofluorescence. This stage laid the foundations for Vircell’s specialization in clinical microbiology and infectious disease diagnostics.
During these years, Vircell also began its international expansion and developed Brucellacapt®, a solution for the diagnosis of chronic brucellosis that became an international reference for chronic forms of Malta fever.
2000-2009 | Scientific specialization and molecular diagnostics
Between 2000 and 2009, Vircell expanded its technical capabilities in ELISA, immunofluorescence, rapid tests and molecular biology, strengthening its role as a provider of infectious disease diagnostic solutions.
In 2005, the company took a key step with the development of AMPLIRUN®, a line of molecular controls for PCR designed to help laboratories improve the accuracy, reliability and standardization of nucleic acid amplification techniques.
This milestone positioned Vircell as a trusted partner for clinical laboratories, research centres and international diagnostic institutions.
2010-2016 | International scale, new facilities and commercial consolidation
From 2010 onwards, Vircell entered a stage of strong international expansion. The approval of Pneumoslide IgM in China opened the door to one of the world’s most demanding in vitro diagnostic markets and encouraged the company to increase automation and production capacity.
In 2013, Vircell opened new facilities in Granada, designed to support its growth and align manufacturing processes with the highest quality standards.
During this period, the company received several awards for its work in research, innovation and internationalization. In 2015, the creation of Vircell Spain reinforced its commercial presence in the national market.
2017-Present | Automation, global response and the future of diagnostics
Since 2017, Vircell has continued to advance as a global infectious disease diagnostics company, combining technological innovation, quality and adaptation to new laboratory needs.
One of the main milestones of this stage has been VirClia® Lotus, a solution that advances automation in infectious serology and improves laboratory workflow efficiency.
During the global COVID-19 emergency, Vircell demonstrated its response capacity by developing diagnostic solutions in record time, bringing together its expertise in PCR, serology and sample collection.
Today, Vircell is present in more than 95 countries and continues to grow on a solid foundation of innovation, quality, regulatory compliance and expertise in infectious disease and molecular diagnostics.
