Background
Meningitis is a high-impact clinical syndrome that requires urgent laboratory information. Bacterial meningitis is particularly severe: approximately one in six affected individuals dies, and one in five survivors may experience serious long-term complications. Viral meningitis is more common, but bacterial disease can progress rapidly and requires a very different clinical response. Initial symptoms may overlap, making accurate etiological identification in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples essential. Certain viral agents, such as Toscana virus and West Nile virus, are of particular relevance in Mediterranean regions or areas where vector-borne transmission occurs.
Conventional diagnostic methods, such as microbiological culture, may require extended turnaround times and can be affected by prior antimicrobial treatment. In this context, molecular techniques enable faster and more sensitive detection of the pathogens involved, providing critical information for clinical decision-making, treatment optimization, and the early implementation of infection control and public health measures.
Product information
The VIRPLEX meningitis portfolio includes both viral and bacterial panels for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples.
- The viral panel detects HSV-1, HSV-2, VZV, enterovirus, human parechovirus, Toscana virus, and West Nile virus.
- The bacterial panel covers agents including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Listeria monocytogenes, Streptococcus agalactiae, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, and Escherichia coli K1.
This structure allows laboratories to select the most appropriate panel according to clinical suspicion and local testing workflows. The inclusion of Toscana virus and West Nile virus provides added value in regions where these pathogens are epidemiologically relevant.
