Background

Legionella pneumophila is a Gram-negative bacillary bacterium that thrives in aquatic environments, especially in stagnant water at elevated temperatures, where its growth is favoured by the presence of organic matter. Although numerous species within the genus Legionella are known, L. pneumophila serogroup 1 is responsible for most human infections and is one of the most relevant causative agents of both community-acquired and nosocomial pneumonia.

Legionellosis is commonly associated with water systems capable of generating aerosols, which explains its particular relevance in collective-use buildings, industrial facilities, tourist environments, hospitals and certain means of transport. For this reason, cases may occur sporadically or as outbreaks, and the disease is considered an important public health concern, subject to specific prevention and control measures in many countries.

In this context, microbiological analysis of environmental samples plays an essential role. The usual approach is based on sample concentration, reduction of the accompanying microbiota and subsequent culture to detect and quantify bacteria of the genus Legionella. Once isolated, it is particularly important to confirm the presence of Legionella pneumophila, especially serogroup 1, due to its high clinical relevance.

Advantages over latex

  • Being an immunochromatographic test, it allows a more objective reading through the appearance of a red band.

  • The genus part of our cassette, unlike the latex tests on the market, is capable of detecting all Legionella species and can function as a screening or confirmation test for Legionella non pneumophila, depending on the method used.

  • The use of our test has a simpler protocol and less manipulation than latex agglutination due to its multitest format.

  • The use of monoclonal antibodies improves the performance of our product, allowing the detection of new species or serogroups that may eventually appear.
