Background

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) affects most of the population. When infection occurs during childhood, it is usually asymptomatic. In adolescents and young adults, however, it is the leading cause of infectious mononucleosis, an acute disease that commonly presents with fever, sore throat and non-specific lymph node involvement.

 

Although its course is usually benign, infectious mononucleosis is a common condition that may raise concern both because of its clinical presentation and because of its similarity to other diseases that require a different approach, such as acute toxoplasmosis, primary HIV-1 infection or even certain haematological disorders. For this reason, a rapid and accurate diagnosis is essential. Since the diagnosis of EBV infectious mononucleosis is primarily serological, it can be established by detecting heterophile antibodies or by using specific assays directed against viral proteins.
