Candida albicans Germ Tube Antibody (CAGTA) Background

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungus and one of the leading causes of invasive candidiasis (IC), a serious healthcare-associated infection associated with high morbidity and mortality, particularly in critically ill, immunocompromised, transplant, and oncology patients, as well as those admitted to intensive care units (ICUs).

During tissue invasion, C. albicans undergoes a morphological transition from the yeast form to germ tubes and hyphal forms. This transformation is closely linked to fungal virulence and to the expression of specific cell wall antigens that are generally not expressed during simple colonization.

The host immune response against these germ tube-associated antigens induces the production of specific IgG antibodies known as Candida albicans Germ Tube Antibodies (CAGTA). These antibodies serve as immunological markers of invasive infection and may contribute to the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis, particularly when used in combination with other microbiological and clinical findings.
