Background

Gastrointestinal infections remain a major global health burden, especially in children and vulnerable populations. WHO estimates nearly 1.7 billion cases of childhood diarrhoeal disease every year worldwide. Acute gastrointestinal disease may be caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites, often with similar clinical presentation. Traditional methods usually require separate workflows: culture for bacteria, antigen testing for some viruses and microscopy for parasites. These methods can be slow, labour-intensive or limited in sensitivity, particularly for difficult-to-culture organisms or low pathogen loads. Stool samples add further complexity because they are heterogeneous and may contain PCR inhibitors that interfere with molecular workflows.

Product information

The VIRPLEX gastrointestinal line is organized into bacterial, viral and parasite panels.

  • Gastrobacteria covers key agents such as Salmonella, Yersinia, Campylobacter, Vibrio, Aeromonas, C. difficile toxin B and pathogenic E. coli groups.

  • Gastrovirus covers major viral causes including norovirus, sapovirus, adenovirus F40/41, astrovirus and rotavirus.

  • Gastroparasites targets relevant protozoa such as Cryptosporidium, Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia. The workflow includes sample pretreatment designed to reduce inhibitors and improve stool sample handling.

Panels can be combined in a structured workflow for laboratories seeking broader stool testing without moving to very large syndromic panels. This approach helps laboratories obtain focused information across the main etiological groups while keeping the process manageable.
